Robert H. Feldman, Ph.D. is a Professor of Health Behavior in the
Department of Public and Community Health at the University of Maryland.
He is also Affiliate Professor in the Center on Aging Graduate Gerontology
Program. Dr. Feldman has collaborated on a number of grants from
the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Environmental
Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health. He has investigated
the effectiveness of interventions to encourage healthier eating
among low income women in the WIC program and infant nutrition programs
for Hispanic mothers. He has also evaluated worker health and safety
programs among various worker groups throughout the United States.
In addition, Dr. Feldman has received grant funding to examine workplace
smoking cessation programs for minority labor union members and
older workers.
Robert H. Feldman, Ph.D., received a doctorate in cross-cultural
social psychology and a Certificate in Eastern African Studies from
Syracuse University. This was completed after serving for two years
as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nigeria, West Africa and Kenya, East
Africa. After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Feldman taught psychology
for two years and then completed a post-doctorate in health behavior/health
psychology at the University of Connecticut Medical-Dental School.
He then joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University School of
Public Health as an assistant professor of health education with
a joint appointment in occupational medicine.
During the Fall 2000 semester Dr. Feldman spent his sabbatical
as a Visiting Scholar and Professor at the University of Newcastle
in Australia. In a cross-national/multi-ethnic study he investigated
the use of complementary and alternative medicine practices among
Australians and Americans from European and Asian backgrounds. Recently,
Dr. Feldman has investigated the integration of smoking cessation
and occupational health and safety for Latino immigrant workers
in Washington, DC and the ceremonial versus commercial use of tobacco
among Native Americans in Arizona.
Dr. Feldman has published over 50 journal articles, 4 books, numerous
book chapters, and has given over 100 professional presentations.
He is co-author of the book, "Occupational Health Promotion:
Health Behavior in the Workplace." Also, Dr. Feldman has published
in the American Journal of Public Health, Health Education and Behavior,
American Journal of Health Promotion, and the Annals of Behavioral
Medicine. He has consulted with the American Lung Association, American
Cancer Society, American Heart Association, AARP, Kaiser Permanente,
and Johns Hopkins University.
