VITA

Barry Portnoy, Ph.D. is a College Park Professor in the Department of Public and Community Health. He serves as Senior Advisor for Disease Prevention, Office of Disease Prevention (ODP), Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health. His current responsibilities include coordinating the NIH portion of Healthy People 2010 and stimulating collaborative prevention research projects. Prior to joining ODP Dr. Portnoy was with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Division of Cancer Prevention. He also served as the NCI coordinator for the Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2000 and 2010 Objectives as well as serving on NIH's Prevention Coordinators Committee and the NIH Behavior and Social Science Coordinating Committee. He has held teaching appointments at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland. He also served as an evaluation consultant to the National High Blood Pressure Education Program, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disease, the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and the Department of Education. His research interests include the design and evaluation of chronic disease prevention and control interventions.
