Undergraduate Course Descriptions

An interdisciplinary analysis of contemporary drug issues and problems. The course will examine physiological, social, philosophical, historical, legal, and health aspects of drug use and abuse. Special attention will be focused on those general motivations for drug use that attend life on the college campus.

An introduction to the theory and practice of public and community health. The influence of public health professionals on the past, present and future health status of society through the examination of critical health issues will be described. Programming models, theories and policy development are included.

Introduction to the dimensions of health as it is related to the individual and to the community. This course introduces constructive methods of health promotion, personal goal setting, and encourages students to take greater responsibility for personal health and well being.
(Several sections of HLTH 140 are offered each semester taught by different instructors. Each section is likely to be organized differently; however, the content will be the same for all sections.)

Lecture, demonstration and training in emergency care, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, controlling bleeding, shock, burns, and injury care. American Red Cross Certificates will be awarded upon completion of the course and passing necessary exams, both written and practical. First aid certificate is valid for three years and CPR certificate is valid for one year.

An overview of specific components and steps involved in the community health research process. Content includes, foundations of research, sampling, measurement design, and analysis in a community context

Psychological, social psychological, and sociological approaches to the development of health attitudes and behavior. The use of behavior change theories as a basis for the development of behavior change intervention programs.

Health problems related to stress and tension. Analysis of causative psychosocial stressors and intervening physiological mechanisms. Emphasis on prevention and control of stress through techniques such as biofeedback, meditation and neuromuscular relaxation.

An examination of biostatistical concepts and procedures as they relate to contemporary issues in public health. Focus on applications, hands-on-experience, and interpretations of statistical findings in public health research.

An examination of the discipline of epidemiology and its application to public health issues and practices, covering current epidemiological concepts and methods.

The course provides an overview of the communication and evaluation of safety and health information. The course emphasizes various types of communications and recipient factors that contribute to their success or failure. Through lecture, reading, a group assignment, and several exercises, students will acquire an understanding of the communication process. This course is designed to familiarize students with the various sources of media and their roles in communicating information on safety and health. It is also meant to help students learn how to work with media organizations and how to use the communication process and strategies to promote health and safety goals and objectives.

This is a survey course that examines the basic foundations of human sexuality, incorporating topical issues of interest and importance. Given the large size of the class, the most common format of the course is lecture, but student participation and involvement is encouraged. In addition to the dissemination of cognitive information, a strong emphasis of the course is placed on the psychosocial aspects of human sexuality, and its impact on individuals and society. Students are encouraged to develop and maintain a personal philosophy concerning sexual decision-making and behavior. The broad goals of the course include an increased knowledge of the biological, developmental, and scientific aspects of human sexuality, in addition to developing a greater awareness of self and others.

Prerequisite: (30 and 230)
The purpose of this course is to provide a broad overview of community health. Health promotion, consumer health, public health, school health, environmental health, preventive medicine, human biology, the health care system, individual health behaviors, and health policy are examined in relation to community health.

Methods and Materials in Health Education (3) Prerequisites: HLTH 130 and 140. The purpose of this course is to present the interrelationship of curriculum planning, methodology and the selection and use of teaching aids and materials. Special problems associated with health teaching and presentation are discussed. Students will become familiar with a variety of resources as well as planning for and presenting demonstration lessons/presentations completed semester before 491 with 490.

The purpose of the course is to provide the student with an understanding of how to promote a healthy and safe workplace. The course will examine occupational stress, occupational safety and health, women’s health, AIDS, violence, drugs, etc. The course will include, lectures, discussions, speakers and films.

Americans are under great pressure to become consumers. They are intentionally encouraged by for-profit enterprise to buy products. Such marketing can either improve or threaten health. This course will explore: how marketing theory can inform health education theory; how marketing strategies and consumer behavior can influence physical, social/psychological, and environmental health; how marketing is regulated; and ethics of marketer and consumer behavior.

This course provides an introduction to women's health concerns and the barriers to achieving complete health. We explore common health issues affecting women from medical, economic and sociopolitical perspectives. Readings, films, and assignments are selected to incorporate issues of age, disability status, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, and social class into our discussion.

Students will be involved in the applied aspects of community health education. Students will apply theory to actual community problems and learn to plan, develop, and evaluate programs while working in project teams. Each team will select a community health problem and develop a proposal to address the problem. This course will help students gain confidence in their ability to function as community health educators and prepare them for their internship experience taken semester before 491 with 420. The purpose of the internship is to enable students to gain practical experience as professionals under conditions conducive to educational development. The internship is a 15 week, full-time, supervised period of community health /public health activities carried out in a variety of settings dependant upon the student’s interests and career goals.
